what is reflexology?

The ancient healing art of reflexology has been known to man for many thousands of years and it is now fast becoming one of the most popular complementary therapies available. Reflexology is a delightful treatment that stimulates the body’s own natural healing process and virtually anyone can benefit from it.

Reflexology uses the application of finger and thumb pressure to specific points in the feet, known as reflexes, to bring about a state of deep relaxation which helps balance mind, body and soul. These reflexes correspond to organs, systems and structures throughout the entire body. By working over the reflexes, vital energy paths are un-blocked, helping to restore balance and the sense of well-being.

It’s important to realise that Reflexologists are not trained to diagnose diseases or attempt to cure specific medical conditions!! What your therapist will do, is help your body to help itself.

how does reflexology work?

Each and every body has an amazing capacity to heal itself and very simply put, reflexology supports your body in doing exactly that! Going for a treatment wont take away the stresses and strains of your lives, only you are in control of that! However, what reflexology will do, is help your body to cope better. (And in some cases it will give you the push necessary to make the changes you would like to make to your life!)

Regular treatments will help treat imbalances in specific organs or areas of your body and more generally will help to strengthen the immune system and ward off illness and fatigue. A calmer state of mind will lead to improvements occurring in many different areas of life and you will have more strength and clarity to make changes that you need. You sleep better, throw fatigue off more easily and generally enjoy life more.

The effect of stress on our bodies
In our hectic and busy world it’s perhaps not surprising that at least 75% of health problems are stress related. Stress, whether it is emotional, physical or mental, creates a number of reactions in our bodies. When we are stressed we are tense. Tense muscles restrict the blood flow, reducing the transportation of oxygen and nutrients to all cells of the body and preventing the proper disposal of toxins. These effects lead to a weakening of the body’s defence system, making us vulnerable to illness and dis-ease.

Stress-busting with reflexology
The state of deep relaxation which we can get from reflexology makes a huge contribution to the return to health. When an organ or part of the body is relaxed it is able to function normally and to make the necessary repairs to bring it back to a balanced state. Spending time in a state of relaxation reminds our body’s and minds what we should feel like. As treatments continue and your body learns once again to relax, the state of relaxation becomes even deeper and even more beneficial.

Gets the circulation moving
Good circulation is critical to good health and reflexology does much to stimulate it. Improved circulation brings about more effective nourishment of your body’s cells and helps get rid of toxins. If you receive the reflexology regularly this all adds up to more energy and vitality!

A caring hand
Much has been written to describe the therapeutic effect of touch. In giving reflexology, the therapist is focusing on caring for the person that receives. That sense of being cared for and the physical contact with another person does much to enhance the self esteem and sense of security, which then leads to an overall sense of improved health and well-being.
